INTRODUCING!

The DCC Dogtooth Tool

Suggested tool sizes [approximate guides]:

SMALL 24” OR LESS SEAM TO POINT [FINISHED] 1", POINT TO POINT 1"  THE TOOL IS: 1-1/2" X 14"

MEDIUM 25” OR MORE SEAM TO POINT [FINISHED] 1-3/4", POINT TO POINT 1-1/2". THE TOOL IS 2-1/4" X 15-1/2"

LARGE 45” OR MORE SEAM TO POINT [FINISHED] 2" POINT TO POINT 2-1/2" THE TOOL IS 2-1/2" X 16"

Here are the instructions:

1.    DETERMINE FINISHED MEASUREMENT OF THE BODY OF THE QUILT [seam to seam].

2.    DETERMINE THE FINISHED WIDTH OF THE BORDER.

3.    PREPARE THE BORDERS

a.    Cut UNIFORM ¼” seam allowances using rotary cutting tools. Mark mitered seam lines at both ends of each border. For an accurate miter, measure FINISHED width. Measure THAT distance outward on border [outside edge]. Draw a line seam line to seam line ~OR~ use the 45 degree line on a ruler aligned to the seam lines.

4.    CUT STRIPS TO BE APPLIQUÉD [the width of the tool being used] SMALL; 1-1/2”, MEDIUM; 2-1/4”, LARGE; 2-1/2”.

a.    Cut the length of the finished [outside edge] borders plus about 6”. Along salvage straight of grain.

5.    BASTE STRIPS TO EDGE OF BORDERS [align cut edges]

6.    CREASE MITERED SEAMLINES [fold and press or use a CLOVER Hera Marking tool and ruler]

a.    Transferring that information from the back of the border to the top of the strips.

7.    ALIGN THE TOOL  ATOP THE STRIP  [mitered edge of tool to creased line on strip]

8.    MARK DOTS TO STRIPS - IN EACH HOLE ON TOOL [Use silver hard lead pencil or mechanical pencil– not ink]

a.    Mark each end of each border in the same way.

b.    Move the tool in slight increments while marking dots at the center of the strips.

9.    CUT DIRECTLY THROUGH DOUBLE DOTS [end on base dot consistently]

a.    Do not cut at solitary dots. See hand and machine instructions.

FOLDING:

1.    Fold from the base of the first cut [‘valley’] up through the solitary dot [‘peak’].

2.    Fold across the top [parallel to the strip’s cut edge]; ‘peak’ to ‘peak’.

3.    Fold from the solitary dot down to the next ‘valley’ dot.  [SEE BELOW]

FOR HAND APPLIQUE CUT, FOLD AND SEW ONE PEAK AT A TIME. BEGIN SEWING AT A MIDPOINT ALONG THE FIRST PEAK [NOT AT THE BASE OF THE CUT]. END AT A MIDPOINT ON THE LAST PEAK AT THE OPPOSITE END. SEW FROM THE END MOST COMFORTABLE TO YOU. AFTER COMPLETING ALL FOUR BORDERS, SEW THE BORDERS TO THE BODY OF THE QUILT, THEN SEW THE MITERED SEAMS TO THE BORDERS AND TRIM THE SEAM ALLOWANCE. THEN SEW AND TRIM THE MITERED SEAMS TO THE APPLIQUE STRIPS. FOLD UNDER THE UNSEWN FLAP OF THE STRIP AND FINISH THE APPLIQUE. [AS SHOWN IN THE OUTSIDE EDGE EXAMPLE].

FOR MACHINE APPLIQUÉ SEW THE MITERED SEAMS TO THE BORDERS TOGETHER AND TRIM THE SEAM ALLOWANCE AND PRESS. BASTE THE APPLIQUE STRIPS TO THE BORDERS. SEW THE MITERED SEAMS TO THE STRIPS; TRIM THE SEAM ALLOWANCE AND PRESS. MARK DOTS, CUT AND FOLD ALL PEAKS. HOLD WITH A PIN THROUGH EACH PEAK. SEW THE EDGES BY MACHINE USING INVISIBLE NYLON OR 60/2 COTTON EMBROIDERY THREAD IN MATCHING COLOR. USE A TINY ZIGZAG OR HEM STITCH. USE THE NEEDLE DOWN TO TURN AT PEAKS AND DOUBLE STITCH THE VALLEYS. ONCE THE APPLIQUE IS COMPLETED, ATTACH THE BORDERS TO THE BODY OF THE QUILT.

THE GROOVED LINE AT EACH END ALIGNS TO THE MITERED SEAM LINE OF AN INSIDE TREATMENT. SIMPLY MARK THE DOTS PROVIDED ON THE TOOL AND CUT, FOLD AND SEW AS DIRECTED FOR QUICK & EASY PREPARATION FOR EITHER HAND OR MACHINE APPLIQUE.

HERE THE TOOL IS LAYING OVER A SEWN EDGE TO SHOW HOW IT ALIGNS TO THE MITERED SEAM — OUTSIDE EDGE. NOTICE THE DOTS AND HOW THEY ALIGN TO THE PEAKS AND VALLEYS.

GENERAL INFORMATION: DO NOT DRAW THE SEAM LINES ONTO THE STRIPS. DO NOT CUT AWAY SEAM ALLOWANCE BEHIND THE APPLIQUED AREA UNLESS NECESSARY.
