MULTIPLE DAYS ~ HAND APPLIQUÉ & HAND PIECING

PROJECT   Four blocks are begun in class.  SOME INTRODUCTORY EXPERIENCE NEEDED.  Fabric choices are discussed, then preparation for hand needle turn appliqué. Cutwork and pictorial appliqué will be presented and begun. Hand piecing of circular patchwork [‘Sunflower pattern’] as well as a simple ‘Evening Star’ block will be presented and practiced. Depending upon the number of days, a session hand quilting can be presented. A kit will be provided. A small supply list will be added for this.

 

SUPPLIES NEEDED: The book, “A Perfect Union of Patchwork & Appliqué” [$14.00 special class discounted price {Reg. $26.95} all students must have the book. They may be shipped ahead.] Fiskars brand scissors [small chisel point], any mechanical pencil, one full sheet fine sandpaper or sandpaper board, silver art pencil [VERITHIN] and/or white chalk pencil, freezer paper, fine silk pins, needles; Richard Hemming & Sons milliners #11, Mettler 60/2 cotton thread in colors of appliqué fabrics, small sharp scissors for threads and fabrics, thimble and any personal sewing tools. Plastic template material, appliqué sharps needles #11, wallpaper knife [found in the wallpaper dept. of a handy guy store $1.98], 6-1/2” x 12” cutting ruler, 50/3 cotton sewing thread in medium gray and light cream, fabric scissors,

OPTIONAL: Rotary cutting tools; med. Mat, cutter and 6-1/2” x 24” cutting ruler, Scotch brand ‘removable’ tape. Karen Kay Buckley’s “Perfect Circles’, embroidery needles and golden brown embroidery floss.

 

MATERIALS NEEDED: Four 8” blocks will be started in class. You may proceed with the full quilt later.

APPLIQUÉ BLOCKS;  Background fabric; 2- 9” squares, Cutwork appliqué one 9” square.

Fat quarter or less of each; 2 bird prints, leaf, stem and tulip as in pattern #1.

PATCHWORK BLOCKS; Background to sunflower block - one 9” square, center circle 7” square, sunflower points -one eighth yard, background to sunflower points - one eighth yard. Background to “Evening Star” block – one fat quarter, center - 5” square, points - eighth yard.

 

CLASS ROOM SET UP: Two 8’ tables and four extra chairs for the instructor. Can the room be darkened for a Power Point presentation? Is there a white wall? 2 irons and boards per every 12 students where possible. GUILDS; One can spray sizing. One box of freezer paper will suffice as well.
