TWO FULL DAYS ~ HAND APPLIQUÉ

PROJECT   56” x 56” quilt* [or one block from the quilt].  SOME INTRODUCTORY EXPERIENCE NEEDED.  On the first day fabric choices and the preparation for hand needle turn appliqué will be presented in the morning, beginning the preparation process in the afternoon [and overnight].  A lesson on sewing will begin the second day of class with time for practice & questions the remainder of the day.

 

SUPPLIES NEEDED: “Nesting” pattern [$12.00 special class discounted price, all students must have the pattern] Fiskars brand scissors [small chisel point], any mechanical pencil, one full sheet fine sandpaper or sandpaper board, silver art pencil [VERITHIN] and/or white chalk pencil, freezer paper, fine silk pins, needles; Richard Hemming & Sons milliners #11, small sharp scissors for threads and fabrics, thimble and any personal sewing tools.

OPTIONAL: Rotary cutting tools; med. Mat, cutter and 6-1/2” x 24” cutting ruler, Scotch brand ‘removable’ tape. Karen Kay Buckley’s “Perfect Circles’, embroidery needles and golden brown embroidery floss.

 

*MATERIALS NEEDED: You may choose to make one 18” block in class and proceed with the full quilt later.

One Block: Background to one block - 19” square, berries - one fat eighth, leaves and stems [three shades of green] - one fat quarter each, birds [2 fabrics per bird, vary the bird colors [there are cardinals] – fat eighth each. Gold bird beak – tiny tidbit.

Full quilt; Background fabric to blocks and borders – 3 yards, backing [44” wide] – 3-1/2 yards, binding – ¾ yard, sashing – ¾ yard, sashing corner stones – 1 fat quarter. Assorted appliqué: leaves [three shades of green] - ½ yard each, berries [red & blue] – 12 squares each, eggs - 6” sq., nest – 2 shades 6” squares each, stems [borders] brown & gold – ¾ yard, stems [blocks] brown & gold – ½ yards each, wreaths [straight directional print, ‘thatch like’ light enough to place other appliqué prints onto] - ¼ yard per wreath, gold bird beaks – tidbit.

 

CLASS ROOM SET UP: Two 8’ tables and four extra chairs for the instructor. Can the room be darkened for a Power Point presentation? Is there a white wall? 2 irons and boards per every 12 students where possible. One can spray sizing.
